For the first time, Ryan's wife let him "work" on her car for the show. Granted, it was just a simple oil change on camera. But, hey, baby steps. The car is a 2004 Mazda3 2.0 with only about 60,000 miles on it so far and she's rather fond of it.
But that got us wondering, how many Jalops are forbidden to work on their wife's or girlfriends car?

Not me, in fact my S/O asks me to look at whatever she thinks is making a noise before she goes to the stealership. Her Bimmer still has factory scheduled maintenece so there's no point for me to work on it, yet.

not forbidden by wife, just made a decision that one of our cars has to work correctly all the time, so hers is serviced by a non-dealership toyota place we love. Even oil changes.
I did change the alternator myself this year though, but she was out of the country so I was running a surplus on perfectly functional vehicles at the time :P

I don't like his methods... the screwdriver into oil filter to avoid an ooey gooey mess... after he already did a big mess because his drain pan was poorly placed, and then it was still a mess. dumb
Also, always been taught to remove oil fill cap during drainage, but whatever.

My wife doesn't own a car, I let her drive one of mine and I do all the maintenance.

We got into a massive argument about doing brake pads. She was down to squealers so I stopped by the parts store and got a set of pads. Easy peasy. Done it a dozen times, especially during the autocross days. Takes no time at all.
So she flipped out and insisted she'd only trust real mechanics with her brakes, "no offense intended."
So she paid about $200 to a local shop... and they forgot the anti-squeal compound.
Geez. Cause ONE 30 car pileup due to failed brakes, and they never let you live it down. Women.
(jk about the pileup bit)

I am not completely forbidden, but I am aware of the risks. Therefore I am very wary about doing anything because no matter what happens to the car. Even if it's 100% unrelated to what I did: Guess who's going to take the blame?
At least that's the type of thing that happened when I cleaned up my lady's laptop fan, and Windows started failing. So, I'm keeping away from any maintenance in her car. But I secretly keep it in shape anyway.
Edit: Also, excellent video. No matter how often you did it, you'll still make at least a little mess. Especially if you're filming it or there's someone watching.

I'm forbidden to workon their cars because I don't have a wife or gf!
Also,I like how they censored out the Chevron oil but not the Purolator filters. Should've used the PureOne oil filter though. It has an awesome textured grip and it's a cool yellow color.

I've yet to find a method of changing the oil in my Focus without making a mess out of it. I've done the screw driver through the filter to drain that oil after the pan is empty, but it still spills oil. It probably would be better if my 10 year old son didn't "help", but the boys gotta learn about cars sometime. If nothing else, he's learning some really good cuss words. ;)

We shot the video as part of the #PurolatorKeepItPure campaign. Because the video was sponsored was the only reason my wife let me touch her car. Purolator decided that the Classic was appropriate for us, though I wouldn't have complained if they sent out a PureOne instead. ;) —Ryan

just leave the pan underneath, unscrew the filter until its just holding on, let the overflow run out, they remove it all the way, tip it upside down to drain the rest into the pan. you'll get a little on your hands, but nothing that 2 seconds of wiping won't fix. And its less even than this guy got on his hands after draining it with a screwdriver

My girlfriend comes to me whenever there is an issue with her car. And now so do her parents, her sister, and her friends.

I'm not trying to hate here, but really? If you hadn't popped a hole in the filter you would have gotten drastically less oil on your hands. I deal with that all the time and get less on my hands, even on the especially annoying 3.7L Jeep engine I work on all the time that I have to access from above the car.
More over when you do an oil change you should check all the fluids you possibly can on the car as well as the air filter to make sure it's still good. Even if you just look through the reservoir to make sure its at/near the "full line".
Final rant is not the posters fault: It pisses me off when I have to remove a skidplate to do an oil change. (damn jeep!)

Girlfriend doesn't have a car, so I'm in the clear, for now.
This video brings up the interesting question though of how often do you need to replace the oil filter? I was reading an article the other about how oil filters can last 2-3 oil changes. But punching a hole in one with a screwdriver? Never even heard of that, and I find it stupid.

That is the easiest positioned oil filter I have ever seen. You should never make a mess with that one. Also, a regular bucket would have a wider mouth than the thing he uses in the video.

He forgot to toss the engine cover in the trash with the rest of the stuff.
